WHO WE ARE

Safe+Sound Iowa is a free anonymous school threat reporting tool for all public and accredited non-public schools across the state provided by the Governor’s School Safety Bureau and the Iowa Department of Public Safety. Students, school staff, parents and community members can submit school safety concerns anonymously using the Safe+Sound Iowa mobile app, website or our toll-free tip line.

Promoting proactive measures and community involvement, our school safety program helps schools create environments where students can learn, grow and thrive without fear. Launched in March 2023, Safe+Sound Iowa continues to gain momentum, teaching school communities how to spot warning signs of violence and when and how to get help.

ANONYMOUS REPORTING

We believe intervention is the cornerstone of a safe school. Research shows students are more likely to reach out for help if they can anonymously report safety concerns.

•    In past school attacks in the U.S., 92% of the people who noticed concerning behaviors prior to the event were schoolmates.1

•    In 4 out of 5 school shootings in the U.S., at least one other person knew of the attacker’s plan but failed to report it.1

•    Students are more likely to report warning signs of potentially threatening behavior if an anonymous reporting system is available to them.2

HOW SAFE+SOUND IOWA WORKS

1. Reports are made anonymously via the Safe+Sound Iowa website, mobile app or tip line.

2. A trained Safe+Sound Iowa dispatcher receives the report.

3. The dispatcher engages in two-way dialog with the person making the report to collect additional information, if necessary.

4. The confidential report is sent to local designated contacts.

5. Content within the report determines who responds and how the situation will be addressed.

6. The at-risk student receives the help they need BEFORE they harm themselves or others.

7. Reports are closed by the responding local school or law enforcement official.
