
Iowa State Patrol Trooper 1's are sworn peace officers assigned to the Iowa State Capitol Complex and Terrace Hill (Governor's mansion) in Des Moines. They strive to provide a safe and secure environment for the Governor, First Family, State Representatives, Supreme Court Justices, other dignitaries and all visiting guests from around the world. Trooper 1's are also responsible for protecting all property and buildings within the Capitol Complex from theft, damage or any adverse action. The minimum age requirement for a Trooper 1 is at least eighteen (18) years of age at the time of graduation from the DPS Academy.
Specific duties include:
- dispatching/radio communications for the Capitol Complex
- executive protection for the Governor and First Family at Terrace Hill
- security for the Iowa State Capitol, Capitol special events, Legislative Session, Supreme Court Hearings
- assisting the First Family
- VIP security for visiting dignitaries
- 24/7 patrol and camera surveillance for the Capitol Complex and Terrace Hill
- monitoring fire alarms
- responding to bomb threats
- monitoring suspicious mail
- crowd/riot control
- monitoring severe weather
- motorist assists
- accident investigations
- background investigations
- traffic/parking enforcement
