Major David Halverson has worked for the Iowa Department of Public Safety for over 28 years
and currently serves as the Administrative Operations Officer based in Des Moines.
 
In 1993, he started his career as a Capitol Police Officer in Des Moines, and in 1995 he
became a Trooper with the Iowa State Patrol serving in District 1, Des Moines.  He was
promoted to Sergeant-Assistant District Commander, District 1 in 2014.  In 2018, he
was promoted to Lieutenant of the Professional Development Bureau. He then served
as Captain-Area “D” Commander from 2020 until 2021 when he was promoted to Major,
Administrative Operations Officer. Major Halverson has served on the ISP Tactical
Unit, as a Drug Recognition Expert and has held positions at the DPS Basic Academy
during (7) different academies since 2012.  He has also served as an instructor in the
disciplines of Defensive Tactics, Taser and OWI/SFST.  
 
His job duties include: Leadership and management of the State Patrol budget, Fleet &
Supply, Human Resources-including Workers Compensation, and Vertical Infrastructure
for fifteen properties across the state.  Ensuring compliance with state policies and
procedures regarding the acquisition of goods and services while simultaneously
efficiently delivering support to the members of the Division.
 
Major Halverson is a graduate of Alexandria Technical College in Alexandria, MN where
he earned an A.A.S. degree in Law Enforcement.  He has also attended Police
Leadership: West Point Model training program.
