Field Operations Major
Major Randy Kunert has worked for the Iowa Department of Public Safety for over 30 years and currently serves as the Field Operations Commander based in Des Moines.
In 1989, he started his career as a Trooper with the Iowa State Patrol in Mason City. Major Kunert has held several leadership positions within the division including: District 16 Assistant Commander (State Capital Complex), Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Homeland Security Officer, Iowa’s Security Chair for the National Governor’s Association Annual Business Meeting, Governor’s Executive Protection Unit, District 1 Assistant Commander, District 1 Commander, and Field Operations Captain in Des Moines. Major Kunert was a member of the Tactical Unit for 16 years, and holds instructor certificates in several areas.
His job duties include: Ensuring integrity and accountability in the delivery of support and services to the public and other entities of state government, creation and application of short and long-term operational goals, provide guidance and direction to Area Commanders, and Assistant Field Operations Officer. Support, assist, and facilitate the implementation of goals and objectives for the Iowa State Patrol.
Major Kunert is a graduate of the International Chiefs of Police Leadership in Police Organization course. He is also a graduate of the Des Moines Leadership Institute, and in 2014 he received the Community Vision award.
