Committed to Reducing Death and Injury on Iowa Roads
Each state is required to have a highway safety program directed by guidelines of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Iowa Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) is a subdivision of the Iowa Department of Public Safety and fulfills this requirement.
GTSB administers the State of Iowa's allocation of federal highway safety funds authorized by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), most commonly known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), signed into law by President Joe Biden on November 15, 2021.
Although GTSB is embedded within the Iowa Department of Public Safety, it takes many agencies and organizations working together to reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries caused by crashes on Iowa roads. Only through on-going collaborative partnerships can a difference be made. GTSB works with various partners such as law enforcement agencies, educators, engineers, emergency services, media and more to lower the rate of death and injury on Iowa roads.
These partners include city, county, state and federal level agencies.
