OTTUMWA, Iowa - On June 10, 2026, the Division of Criminal Investigation was called to an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the 500 block of North Green Street, Ottumwa, IA.
At approximately 12:30 p.m., members of the US Marshal Service (USMS) attempted to serve an arrest warrant on Michael Zurek, 31. During the interaction, a US Marshal discharged his weapon, striking Zurek.
Zurek died at the scene. No law enforcement officers were injured.
The USMS is cooperating with the investigation. In accordance with USMS policy, the deputy who fired their weapon has been placed on administrative leave.
The findings of the investigation conducted by DCI and Ottumwa Police Department will be provided to the Wapello County Attorney and Iowa Attorney General for review.
No additional information will be released at this time.
